O'Fallon Grand Prix - Cat 4 - Ryan Harden

posted on Jun 16 2014 by Ryan Harden

The race started neutral as expected. There was a minor attack from the gun that I think was more likely two guys from a team riding and talking and just rode off the front. So it was less an attack, more of a slowly riding away from the group. A couple guys yelled because they had a team member sitting on the front of the pack slow pedaling, but the rest of us didn't bother since we still had 57 miles to go. The first lap was almost completely uneventful. There were a handful of sections where the group strung out pretty good, accelerated to 30ish, then slowed and contracted.

The short: 10:48 total, 3:45 new Ironman marathon PR, 11th in 50-54 age group: Best rank yet, clawing my way to the top 10 where rolldown qualification for Kona becomes plausible…  Still no ‘hot’ sub-4 IM-marathon: a tropical storm came through, it rained all day, and the temperature dropped to 70 F.

Toughman Indiana Half-Iron Triathlon

I have been racing tri for nearly 7 years now and thought I had learned just about everything about race preparation, tactics, and fueling. My results over the last two seasons have been very satisfying, with USAT rankings steadily trending upward. However, sometimes success breeds complacency and lessons forgotten must be relearned. I had a good race at the 1st Toughman Indiana in favorable conditions a year ago.
